About G.S.Teachers College

Vidya Bhawan GS Teachers college Udaipur founded in1942 is one of the Institutes of Vidya Bhawan Society, an association registered under the Mewar Societies Registration Act No. VII of 1941. Its foundation stone was laid on 3rd October, 1942 by Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Prime Minister of Jaipur State.

Vidya Bhawan was founded in 1931 by an eminent educationist Dr. Mohan Sinha Mehta, one of the pioneers in the field of progressive education in India. It was some time in 1926-1927 that Dr. Mehta had conceived the idea of a new school for transformation and reconstruction of Indian society. It is with this goal that the foundation of Vidya Bhawan School was laid in July 1931.

During the period of consolidation of the Vidya Bhawan School, Dr. Mehta simultaneously visualized the role of teachers in achieving the desired goals. As a result of this Vidya Bhawan G.S.Teachers College was started in 1942. It was the first teachers training college in Rajasthan . Dr. Mehta's close associate Dr. K.L.Shrimali,who later became Education Minister, Govt. of India, was the first principal of this college.

Initially, this teachers college took up the training of teachers for the certificate of teaching which continued for six years i.e. from 1942 to 1948. During this period, it was affiliated to the Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana (including Ajmer-Merwar), Central India and Gwalior, University of Rajasthan(Formely Rajputana). M.Ed. course was started in 1951. Doctoral Programme was added later on and the first Ph.D. Degree was awarded in 1963.

Since the session 1964-65, the college has been preparing candidates for B.Ed., M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees. Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Dip. E.C.Ed.) 1969.

In the year 1993 the college was upgraded to an Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE) under the scheme of qualitative improvement of Teacher Education as envisaged in the National Policy on Education, 1986. Presently the Institute is affiliated to Mohan Lal Sukhadia University , Udaipur(Rajasthan). The growth chart of the institution can be seen here.

About Kala Sansthan (STC)

Vidya Bhawan Kala Sansthan is one of the oldest institutions of Vidya Bhawan Society. It was a joint venture of Vidya Bhawan and State of Mewar that Kala Sansthan came into existence. It was founded by Sir. T.Vijay Raghwacharya, first prime-minister of Mewar on 1st Jan 1944. It was a dream came true when Dr. Mohan Sinha Mehta, an eminent educationist founded Vidya Bhawan in 1931. Then a chain of 11 institutions grew under his visionary spectrum & Vidya Bhawan Kala Sansthan is one of them. Initially this institution started with a short course of 4 ½ months. As the name itself suggests that the course was related to craft education. In 1945 this course was changed into one year course. The objective behind this was to promote indigenous crafts through schools. In 1952-53 after the recommendations of Mudaliar Commission craft education was made compulsory subject in schools. At that time this was the only institution which imparted training in handicrafts to prospective teachers. In 1958-59 the course was changed into two year diploma course. The course was so good that even foreign students also came here to take training. These students after passing out from here got services in multipurpose schools. But there was a problem that these students were not given the the status of STC trained teachers. Therefore it was decided to close the handicraft institution and started STC course at its place. But in 1999 Goverment of Rajasthan again discontinued STC. Again, in 2005 after the strong efforts of Vidya Bhawan STC of Vidya Bhawan Kala Sansthan was restarted. At present it is being run running successfully.

Objectives of the Institute

The main objectives of the Vidya Bhawan IASE are:-
